Auditions

If you are interested in auditioning for the New York City Master Chorale, please contact us at info@nycmasterchorale.org to set up an audition time. We seek experienced singers who are confident in their music-reading skills and have a strong sense of pitch. Rehearsals are a place of both artistic expression and camaraderie. We are deeply committed to the continued musical growth of each of our members.

Auditions are held at Opera America.

The next round of auditions will be announced soon.

We are glad to arrange virtual auditions as needed.

What to Expect at your Audition
Auditions will be 10 minutes long and will have three parts:

  1. The Artistic Director will lead you through a few vocal warm-ups, and evaluate your pitch memory.
  2. You will sing a ~30 second excerpt that we will provide to you before the audition, giving you enough time to practice.
  3. You will sing a brief prepared solo (2-3 min) of your choice in any style, with or without accompaniment.
Time Commitment

The Master Chorale meets every Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m. at a rehearsal space in midtown Manhattan. Singers are expected to attend rehearsals in their entirety and attendance at dress rehearsals is mandatory. Participation in concerts is contingent upon rehearsal attendance. We recognize that business and family commitments may sometimes interfere with rehearsal attendance, at which time the singer should contact their section leader. Members who miss more than three rehearsals in a given concert rehearsal period will be required to meet with the Artistic Director to sing for and/or speak with her to determine if the singer is adequately prepared for the performance.

Singers are expected to sing in every scheduled performance unless an exception is granted by the Artistic Director.

Financial Commitment

Membership dues for each season are $175 per singer, with payment plans available. Scholarship funds are also available – please let us know if dues are an impediment to your joining and we will work with you. All singers must be in good standing, with dues paid or in progress or scholarship support determined in order to participate in performances.

Singers are also encouraged to volunteer with the Chorale – we enjoy learning about everyone’s interests and skill sets and have collaborated many times with current and former members who have experience (or a desire to learn!) in audio engineering, graphic design, grant writing, photography, marketing and more.

Additional fees may apply for concert attire, scores, required tickets, and a black choral folder.
